How CustomCornea® Works
Custom LASIK procedures with the CustomCornea® system can be broken down into three steps:
Precision Mapping
On the day of your Custom LASIK surgery, your visual imperfections will be measured by a device called the LADARWave®, producing what is known as a “wavefront map.” The LADARWave® passes flat waves of light through your eye to reveal any irregularities in your cornea. As the light then exits your eye, the distorted waves are measured and compared to the flat waves you would have if your optical system was perfect. The result – a precise map of your eye that reveals any and all unique imperfections affecting the quality of your vision.
Matching the Map to the Eye
If our eye surgeons determine that you are a candidate for Custom LASIK, the next step involves transferring your personalized wavefront map to the LADARVision® excimer laser. The wavefront map is programmed into the laser to serve as its guide, ensuring that every movement of the laser will be as accurate as possible.
Corneal Reshaping
The third and final step of Custom LASIK with the CustomCornea® system is the actual reshaping of the cornea with the excimer laser. Guided by your personal wavefront map, the excimer laser treats the visual imperfections in your eyes quickly and effectively. At our Springfield, Massachusetts eye center, our surgeons have chosen to perform Custom LASIK surgery with the LADARVision® excimer laser to ensure the best possible result. The LADARVision® laser contains a tracking system that tracks your eye an amazing 4,000 times per second! This is important because the eye tends to move involuntarily during surgery.
