Going to the Beach This Summer? How to Keep Your Eyes Protected
The first thing you may be thinking about protecting when you’re on a beach vacation is probably your shoulders or skin on your face (after all, you don’t want to end up looking like last year’s lobster, do you?). And even though it’s just as important to keep your skin protected from the sun’s harsh rays, it’s equally as important to protect your eyesight while you’re at the beach. Whether you plan on sitting underneath a cabana drinking a pina colada, reading a book, or frolicking in the water with your kids, we have a few ways to keep your eyes protected.
Goggles
Yes, you may think that goggles are only for teenagers on the high school swim team, but imagine all of the salt, fish poop, sand, and dirt floating around the ocean; it’s enough to make you want to gag a little, right? Now imagine exposing your eyes to all of that junk. Before you dunk your head under the ocean water, consider putting on some goggles. Not only will you come out of the water without feeling like your eyes are burning off, but you won’t have to worry about that nasty bacteria getting into them either.
Sunglasses
Your number one beach accessory (other than a swimsuit and sunscreen) should be a good pair of UVA and UVB blocking sunglasses. Even if you are sitting in the shade, the sun can sneak in and cause some serious retinal damage. If you are bringing little kids to the beach, make sure that you get them some sunglasses as well so that they don’t get any premature eye damage while you are playing in the sand.
Watch the Sand
Digging in the sand is fun for kids (and adults) of all ages, but make sure that everyone keeps the sand on the ground. Sand can cause severe corneal scratches and even permanent eye damage if you’re not careful. If it’s a windy day at the beach, try to get your family to do another game, so that you won’t even have to worry about the damage.
