April is Women’s Eye Health Month
April is Women’s Eye Health Month
The organization Prevent Blindness has designated April as Women’s Eye Health Month. While eye health advocacy is important for all, you might be surprised to learn that it’s even more important for women to understand the need for preventative eye care.
Women Suffer from More Eye Trouble, on Average
While many things between men and women are 50/50, eye health isn’t one of them. According to data from the National Eye Institute (NEI), two-thirds or nearly 64% of the world’s population of blind or visually impaired are women. The data shows a clear correlation; women, on average, have more eye problems throughout their lives.
Even more worrying is that the number of cases of visual impairment is increasing year after year, whether due to increased screen time or better reporting, it tells us that eye care has never been more important.
Eye Health Starts with Preventative Care
Your eyes connect you to the world around you. The preventative care of your visions plays the most important part in maintaining your sight, no matter your age. As we age, many of us suffer from age-related vision loss, however, with some help from our eye doctor, we can slow that vision loss. Here’s what we suggest:
- Take frequent breaks from your screen, whether in the office or at home
- Wear sunglasses anytime you’re outside, even if it’s cloudy
- Remove your contact lenses when you sleep
- Eat a balanced diet
- Exercise regularly
- Get regular eye exams
You might be wondering how often you should see the eye doctor. The answer depends on the person.
Celebrate Women’s Eye Health Month by Making an Appointment
The NEI recommends that you go to the eye doctor for an eye exam every 2 years if you do not suffer from any vision problems. However, if you have any kind of visual impairment, even mild, then the NEI recommends an annual exam.
It’s important to remember that eye conditions like Macular Degeneration happen slowly over a long period. While you might feel that your vision is perfect now, it could be giving you subtle problems that only your eye doctor can identify. The sooner you tackle an eye problem, the better the chances that you can mitigate it.
